You probably want to know what to do to lead people correctly, and that also means you need to know what can be done wrong. Leading others is difficult at best, requiring certain decisions that impact lives. Use this advice in order to give being a leader your best shot. Leaders should keep things simple. Be sure to focus on the important things. Once that's been accomplished, you'll be able to set priorities. Try to simplify things as much as possible. Also, make sure to create thinking time for yourself and others. Never assume that your employees read minds. Be concise with what you want done and how you want it done. That way, if staff members don't understand your instructions, they won't hesitate to come to you and ask for advice. You need to set goals that are high for yourself, but make sure they are possible. This will only lead to failure. This is something you want to avoid, as you will be looked upon as being a bad leader. Great leaders know they do not have a lot to learn. You might have good ideas and think you're perfect, but others may wish to add something, too. Others may be better able to see things that you can't, such as ways to improve a particular process or a certain flaw that needs to be remedied. Always let your team know you appreciate them. It does not take long to write a note of thanks, but it might mean the world to someone who's working for you. A little acknowledgement can lift a mood, brighten a day and doesn't cost you a thing. When you set goals for your project or team, make them rigorous, but not impossible to attain. If you use impossible goals that will just set you up for failing. That's a good way to show that you aren't the good leader you thought you were. Set some high goals for others to reach, but be sure they're not impossible. If you set up impossible goals, your team will continually fail. This is something you want to avoid, as you will be looked upon as being a bad leader. Keep good morals. If your competition is doing tasks that make you feel uneasy, try finding alternatives to compete. There is nothing that says you must compromise your morals to stay relevant. If you find an innovative way to do business, you will be much prouder of your choice. Leaders must separate what is currently happening vs what is inside their head. The two could be at odds. If there are things weighing on your mind, you need an outlet for them. Write it down so you won't get too distracted from what you're currently doing. Be a role model to others. Avoid relying on your title alone. In order for your employees to do the things necessary that makes them great, you need to be the one who sets this positive example for them to follow. No one wants to work for a hypocrite. Try being somebody your peers can respect. You need to portray yourself as a leader if you're in line for an available leadership role. Model yourself after effective leaders you admire. Dress the part, speak professionally and respect those above you. Even if you don't think you will personally benefit from it, always go beyond what is required. These qualities are representative of someone who is suited to leadership. A good leader makes great decisions. Effective leaders are usually talented at making the right decision. It is also important for you to take risks. Being able to quickly make decisions will help your leadership abilities. Once a decision has been made, avoid second guessing it. Just because you make a decision doesn't mean it will work. It's important to learn from that and try new paths. Those who are renowned for having great leadership skills are those who have enhanced the lives of all those around them. There are plenty of different leadership styles, and you can mix and match the techniques that best fit your needs.
